Actively store CO2 with Ecolation

What if insulation didn’t just reduce emissions but actively stored carbon?

Today we’re introducing Ecolation: a CCUS (Carbon capture, utilization, and storage) startup developing CO₂-mineralized insulation materials designed to turn buildings into carbon sinks.

Ecolation started as a project in the Master’s in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship & Innovation at ESCP Business School, in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). One question kept coming up:

What if insulation didn’t just reduce emissions but actively stored carbon?

Since then, we’ve been building Ecolation with a clear ambition: deliver carbon-negative insulation at high performance and without compromising real-world applicability. Our goal is not to be “another sustainable material" but to build the next market champion in building insulation.

The rise of a new market champion in insulation materials for buildings.

Meet the Team

Dominik Thiel (CEO) is the originator of the Ecolation concept and its production design. With a background in Industrial Engineering (TU Berlin, Energy & Resources) and a Master’s in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (ESCP Business School), Dominik is the bridge within the team between science and economics. He leads Ecolation’s strategy and early-stage execution, translating climate ambition into a fundable, scalable business.
At Ecolation, Dominik drives the roadmap from TRL II validation to market entry and builds the partnerships, positioning, and go-to-market narrative required to scale a new insulation material into the built environment.

Dr. Abbas Beheshti Askari (CSO) brings the scientific depth required to create a material that performs outside the lab. Abbas leads the scientific development from early validation through proof-of-concept and prototype stages, with expertise in inorganic synthesis, advanced characterization, and performance-driven optimization. He earned his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion and worked as an R&D Scientist at BASF and at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin.
At Ecolation, Abbas defines the scientific roadmap, designs reproducible synthesis and characterization workflows, and ensures material development decisions are driven by robust, application-relevant evidence, building the foundation for a scalable and certifiable insulation product.

Torsten Reiss (CFO) leads Finance, Investor Relations and Operations, building investor-grade planning, fundraising readiness, and scalable execution systems. He is a finance and operations leader and Managing Partner at Reiss Consulting LLC, with a background spanning capital markets, board-level leadership, and hands-on scaling across Europe and the U.S.
Torsten started his career in investment banking as a Junior Trader at Deutsche Bank and later continiued as Senior Project Manager at zeb (banking and insurance strategy consulting). Thereafter he served as Executive Chairman of the Board at former BGP (now EY-Parthenon) & Global Strategy INC, leading Central and Eastern Europe and greenfield expansion.
In addition, he founded, scaled and exited a US-based venture within 29 months for a multiple of 42. Further he held corporate development and finance leadership roles in the U.S., including franchising and investor relations. As a consultant, he has supported 40+ startups during their scale-ups, bringing a pattern-recognition advantage and an operator’s playbook for building a globally scalable company.

Together with our complementary skills we aim to turn buildings into carbon sinks!
If you’re active in building materials, construction, testing and certification, or industrial scale up, or you invest in climate and buildings, we’d love to connect.
